Introduction:

Welcome to the History department. Most students at The Jubilee Academy will study History; the subject is provided for all students in Key Stage 3 and is an option subject at GCSE that contributes to the EBacc.

As a department at TJA we want our students to develop their interest and passion for history - to help them find that spark for a fascination with the past. We aim to do this by making History lesson a positive and engaging experience.

From Key Stage 3 to GCSE students will develop a wide range of knowledge and skills that will help within history lessons and beyond. The key skills and concepts such as: chronology, continuity and change, causation, significance, interpretation and evaluation are developed at KS3 and built upon at GCSE. Student progress is regularly assessed throughout the school year. This is achieved through both formative and summative assessment. Students are provided with feedback in line with school’s policy on Teaching and Learning. This will include regular ‘4 part-marking’, as well as through peer- and self-assessment.

Not only will students understand the past but, hopefully, how this can be used to help make better decisions in the future.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum:

The History Department’s Key Stage 3 scheme of work covers the period from the Norman Conquest of England up until the early Tudors (1066-1553). This provides students with a strong understanding of the history of these islands and links directly to several topics that may be studied at GCSE. Units covered within this include topics such as: investigating how William was able to conqueror England in 1066; considering the amount of power Medieval Kings held; judging the significance of the Black Death and the Peasants Revolt and learning about the turbulent reign of the early Tudors. Schemes of work and lessons are designed to not only provide students with a sound foundation of skills and knowledge for future study of History at GCSE and beyond, but also to raise their interest and passion for the subject. This is achieved through a wide range of activities such as: role play; creating newspaper reports; writing letters and examining contemporary sources.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum:

We are following the Edexcel (9-1) History course. We study the following units:

Early Elizabethan England, 1558-1588

This is a depth study of what is widely considered as a remarkable time in British History, now named the ‘Golden Age’. This unit covers issues such as: the religious divisions; the challenge of ruling as a female; threats to Elizabeth at home and abroad; Elizabethan culture and discoveries and voyages – the Age of Exploration.

Superpower relations and the Cold War, 1941-91

This is a period study. This is one of the most fascinating and contentious periods in modern history. Students will study topics including: the origins of the Cold War; the Cold War Crises, and the end of the Cold War – including the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Medicine through Time:

This is a thematic study covering a long period of time, focusing particularly on Britain. The aim of the unit it to investigate how medicine has (or has not) developed over time. This will examine topics such as: medicine in medieval England; The Medical Renaissance in England; medicine in 18th and 19th Century Britain – including the Industrial Revolution and finally the 20th Century. This unit also includes investigating ‘The British sector of the Western Front, 1914-1918.’ This is a study of the historical environment. For this topic students will need to develop the skills necessary to analyse, evaluate and use contemporary sources to make substantiated judgements.

Weimar and Nazi Germany, 1918-1939

This is a depth study that examines how Germany collapsed from democracy into a brutal dictatorship. Students will study topics including: the Weimar Republic – including the legacy of the First World War; Hitler’s Rise to Power; Nazi control and dictatorship and life in Nazi Germany.

Assessment:

The new History (9-1) GCSE is 100% external examination – there is no coursework or controlled assessment. This means three examination papers are sat at the end year 11.
