Curriculum and Assessment Maps
Introduction
Welcome to the Mathematics department at The Jubilee Academy. Mathematics is a core subject which is studied by all students. Students are exposed to mathematical concepts through interactive teaching. This helps them to cultivate and maintain an appreciation for mathematics as they relate such to real life experiences. The members of the department are Mr James, Mr Thomas and Mr Grant.
Students are assessed on a regular basis during the year. This is done through formative and summative assessment. Our school’s Teaching and Learning policy requires students both getting and giving feedback for work produced. This is done using a “4 part-marking” system which allows teacher’s comment/action, student’s response and teacher follow up as well as facilitate peer and self-assessment.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum
The Key Stage 3 scheme of work is designed from the New GCSE 9-1 Curriculum. Students are taught concepts and skills in Numbers, Algebra, Shapes and Statistics. This scheme of work is designed for the Respite group who normally return to their Home School. We prepared them to understand mathematical concepts, so they are not left behind in Mathematics upon reintegration at their Home School. Those who remain will move on to do the tailored GCSE syllabus.
Curriculum for Years 9, 10 and 11
The syllabus for year 9 to 11 is divided into four main categories namely: Numbers, Algebra, Shapes and Statistics. This syllabus covers all the skills that students need to prepare for their final GCSE maths exam in year 11. We follow the GCSE Edexcel syllabus in preparing students for their final Mathematics exam in May to June each year.
Assessment
The new GCSE (9-1) Mathematics exam is 100% externally assessed. Students receive a grade between 9 and 1 with 9 being the highest
The Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9 to 1) in Mathematics is a tiered qualification. There are two tiers:
- Foundation tier - grades 1 to 5 available
- Higher tier grades – 4 to 9 available (grade 3 allowed).
The assessment for each tier of entry consists of three externally-examined papers, all three must be from the same tier of entry. Students must complete all three papers in the same assessment series.
Students are entered for either the higher paper or the foundation paper based on their ability.

Progression
Students can progress from this qualification to Level 3 qualifications in numerate disciplines, such as:
- Core Mathematics
- GCE Mathematics and GCE Further Mathematics
- GCEs in the sciences
- GCE Geography
- GCE Psychology
- GCE Economics
- other qualifications that require mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding.
There is a clear progression path from Foundation tier to Higher tier within this qualification. This qualification also supports further training and employment where mathematical skills are required.
Progression From GCSE
This qualification prepares students for progression to further study of mathematics at AS and A level, and also to the study of Core Mathematics. These Level 3 qualifications prepare students for a variety of further progression routes. Students should seek advice about which of these qualifications best prepare them for their intended progression routes.
GCSE Mathematics is a requirement for progression to a wide range of courses at Level 3. Students are expected to continue with their study of GCSE Mathematics after the age of 16 if they have not achieved the qualification at Key Stage 4.
