Introduction:

Welcome to the Citizenship department. Citizenship is an optional subject at Key-Stage 4, which is delivered by Mr. Mordant.

Student progress is regularly assessed throughout the school year. This is achieved through both formative and summative assessment. Students are provided with feedback in line with school’s policy on Teaching and Learning. This will include regular ‘4 part-marking’, as well as through peer- and self-assessment.

Curriculum:

We are following the Edexcel (9-1) Citizenship course. The aim of the course is to educate students about a range of social issues, including: the history of UK democracy; the role of law; and how to become an active, global citizen. Students will develop these skills and their knowledge through the following topics:

• Theme A: Living together in the UK (developing communities, identity, democratic values, local democracy).
• Theme B: Democracy at work in the UK (elections and voting systems, how Parliament works).
• Theme C: Law and Justice (the role of law, criminal and civil law, sentences and punishment).
• Theme D: Power and Influence (the power and influence of citizens, groups and the media).
• Theme E: Taking Citizenship action (a student lead campaign addressing one of the themes above)

Assessment:

Citizenship GCSE is 100% external examination – there is no coursework or controlled assessment. This means two examination papers are sat at the end year 11.
